Our Honey Bees & Honey

It's hard to imagine how inheriting one hive could evolve into such a blessing. Our farm is now actively involved in breeding honey bees from proven genetics. Our favorites are the good ol' Kentucky mutts, as we like to call them. These bees are the ones we catch in swarms in the springtime. By monitoring the offspring of the queen over the course of a full year, we are able to record temperament; varroa sensitivity and hygenics; and whether they are good honey producers.

We will then graft from the queens showing the best genetics. These new virgin queens are then placed into splits. They will venture out to drone congregation areas (DCAs) to mate. Once they have been laying a good brood pattern for three weeks, we then sell them to new and experienced beekeepers.

We sell five-frame nucleus colonies (nucs) and occasionally virgin queens. The nucs we sell include a newly-mated marked queen (the paint color will correspond with the year she is bred) and five deep frames which include honey and/or pollen, frames of brood in different stages and a frame of foundation and/or comb. We strive to provide our customers with healthy, happy bees raised on our farm.

Our virgin queens are sold very soon upon emergence. They are ready for their mating flights approximately one week later. You can usually expect to see eggs approximately one week after that if she has returned successfully. The weather plays a critical role in this process.

We also sell delicious pure raw honey. All honey from our farm is certified through the Kentucky Certified Honey Program through the Kentucky State Beekeepers Association. We will begin harvesting usually in late June. Everything is, of course, dependent upon the weather. Over the course of the season, two or three harvests can usually be expected. We also participate in the Kentucky Proud program.
